What the room format was actually good at

It is worth being fair to it: rooms were good at ambient company. You could sit in one, half-read, contribute occasionally, and feel like you were somewhere. That is a real thing and a direct match does not replace it.

What rooms were bad at was the other mode — wanting one person's full attention for ten minutes. In a room that requires extracting someone from a group conversation, which is socially expensive and often just does not happen.

Video changes the maths

Text rooms scale to forty people because text is cheap to skim. Video does not scale that way — with two people it is the richest thing on the internet, and with forty it collapses into a grid of thumbnails nobody is really watching.
